Finite element methods for parabolic optimal boundary control problems and related boundary value problems Konstantinos Qchrysafinos Departments of Mathematical Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University Abstract: We cosinder optimal Dirichlet control problems for parabolic partial differential equations. We discuss some issues concerning the existence of optimal solutions and the finite element approximation of the corresponding optimality system. Furthermore, we present a penalized approach which appears to be more attractive from the computational point of view. Finally, we discuss some related boundary value problems.
