Informational Meeting - September 13, 2012

We had our annual informational meeting where we explained the benefits of becoming a SIAM member and also shared our event plans for the new academic year. Pizza lunch and soft drinks were provided.

Career Workshop - October 26, 2012

We had a Career Workshop hosted by the University of Pittsburgh's SIAM Student Chapter and the Mathematics Department. The workshop took place on Friday, October 26th, from 11:00am to 3:30pm. The event featured four alumni speakers from the Mathematics Department currently working in industry: Bojana Pejic (ļ¬nance), Sara Hritz (national security and defense), Robert Berry (climate science) and Matthew Jackson (biostatistics - Presentation Slides and Pay Scale for Federal Government Employees). It included a roundtable discussion. Lunch and refreshments were provided.

Matlab Workshop - December 1, 2012

Mike Sussman from the Mathematics Department led a two-hour workshop on Matlab ODE solvers in Benedum Hall B0 6 A&B. Lunch was provided. The presentation slides as well as the Matlab files can be found here.

XPP Workshop - January 26, 2013

We hosted a two-hour XPP Workshop led by Professor Bard Ermentrout on Saturday January 26th in Benedum B0 6 A&B. We had pizza following the conclusion of the workshop.

XPP Workshop

XPP is a software program developed by Prof. Ermentrout for solving systems of differential equations. For more information about the software and its applications, as well as downloading instructions, go here. The software is also installed on the computers in Benedum B0 6 A&B.

On February 21, we visited the Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art.

LaTeX Workshop - March 2, 2013

Mathematics Professor Paul Gartside led a 2-hour LaTeX Workshop on Saturday, March 2, 2013, from 10am-12pm in the Benedum Hall LAB classroom B0 6 A&B. We had pizza and soft drinks following the workshop. All the files used during the workshop, as well as instructions on downloading LaTeX, are given below.

Basic Instructions for Installing LaTeX:

To install LaTeX for Microsoft Windows (for Windows 7, Vista, and XP):

1. Download MiKTeX: Go to http://miktex.org/2.9/setup. Select the MiKTeX 2.9.4503 Net Installer to download a complete LaTeX system. You may also choose the Basic Installer, which will automatically install missing packages provided you have internet connection. Accept the default installation settings for the user and directory.
2. Download Ghostscript: http://www.ghostscript.com/download/
3. Choose and download an editor: Texmaker (http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/), Texstudio (http://texstudio.sourceforge.net/), TexnicCenter (http://www.texniccenter.org/resources/downloads/), TeXworks (already included in MikTeX), WinEdt (http://www.winedt.com/).

To install LaTeX for MAC:

Download MacTeX (http://tug.org/mactex/).

To install LaTeX for Unix/Linux:

Download TeX Live (http://www.tug.org/texlive/).

Game Night - April 12, 2013

We hosted a game night for graduate students on Friday, April 12, from 6:30-9:30pm, in 705 Thackeray (7th floor lounge). Games included Chess, Scrabble, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Ricochet Robots, Set and many more!
