Informational Meeting - September 8, 2011

We held an informational meeting where we explained all the benefits of joining SIAM and discussed our plans for the upcoming year.

Graduate Panel for Undergraduates - October 18, 2011

Our SIAM Chapter and the Math Club co-hosted a graduate panel for undergraduates. This event was designed for undergraduates interested in pursuing a graduate degree in a mathematics related area. It consisted of a presentation by the Mathematics Graduate Director, Dr. Paul Gartside, addressing the basics of the application process, and a Q&A session during which undergraduates were able to ask a panel of graduate students about their graduate experience.

Guest Speaker from Industry - November 3, 2011

John Bartels, a graduate from Pitt who currently works at Immunetrics (http://www.immunetrics.com), gave a talk where he addressed topics including: cultural differences between academia and industry, advantages / disadvantages of industry life, typical problems mathematicians work on in industry. The presentation was followed by an informal Q&A session.

FreeFEM++ Workshop - November 12, 2011

Nate Mays led a two-hour introduction to FreeFEM++ workshop. FreeFEM++ is a programming language and software for solving Partial Differential Equations using the Finite Element Method.

"Life After Graduate School" Panel - February 21, 2012

We had our annual "Life After Graduate School" Panel on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, for all graduate students in the Mathematics Department. Topics included post-doctoral positions (why choose a post-doc position, the application process, life as a post-doc, etc.), full time faculty positions, and grant writing. The panel comprised of both faculty and post-docs from various areas of mathematics. Pizza and drinks were provided.

HTML Workshop - March 24, 2012

Tracy Stepien led a two-hour web site workshop on Saturday, March 24, in Benedum Hall B0 6 A&B.

Topics discussed included HTML, CSS, Web Standards, Web Accessibility, and Information Architecture. By the end of the workshop, participants were able to use the tools learned to design and build their own web sites.

At the conclusion of the workshop we had pizza lunch.

Regional SIAM Student Chapter Conference at Shippensburg University - April 6-7, 2012

We traveled to Shippensburg, PA to attend a conference for graduate and undergraduate students that was in partnership with the SIAM Student Chapters of University of Delaware, George Mason University, Penn State University, University of Maryland - Baltimore County, and University of Pittsburgh.

2012 SIAM Annual Meeting (AN12) - July 9-13, 2012

Our Chapter took part in the Student Days at the 2012 SIAM Annual Meeting held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 9-13. Marina Moraiti represented the Chapter at the Student Chapter meeting with SIAM Leadership.
