2009-2010

2010 SIAM Annual Meeting - July 12-16, 2010

The SIAM Annual Meeting was held in Pittsburgh during the summer at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Many of our student members attended the conference and presented talks or posters. We also helped SIAM with their conference operations and created a "Restaurants and Things To Do In Pittsburgh" brochure for conference attendees.

End-of-the-Year SIAM and GSO Happy Hour - April 16, 2010

Members were invited to join the officers and the GSO at Hemingway's for Happy Hour.

MATLAB Workshop - March 31, 2010

Cheng Ly led a Differential Equations MATLAB Workshop, featuring both ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs). Workshop participants reviewed some basic operations in MATLAB, and demonstrated how to use built-in ODE solvers in MATLAB. After which participants implemented a simple numerical solver for a 1-D advection/diffusion PDE.

The workshop was open to all graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in mathematics and applied mathematics fields. Some familiarity with MATLAB and differential equations (ODEs and PDEs) was a prerequisite for the workshop. The demonstration elucidated the utility of matrices/vectors in MATLAB for various purposes. Food was provided at the conclusion of the workshop.

Regional SIAM Student Chapter Conference at Shippensburg University - March 20, 2010

The SIAM/MAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Applied Mathematics Student Conference was held at Shippensburg University in partnership with the SIAM Student Chapters at University of Delaware, George Mason University, and University of Pittsburgh.

"Life After Graduate School" Panel - March 4, 2010

We hosted a "Life After Graduate School" Panel for all mathematics graduate students (pure and applied). Current post-docs and faculty were on hand to discuss post-doctoral positions (application process, reasons for choosing a post-doc, life as as a post-doc, etc.), full-time faculty positions, grant writing, as well as other topcs.

Social Event - February 5, 2010

Members were invited to join the officers at Hemingway's for Happy Hour.

XPP Workshop - October 17, 2009

We hosted an XPP Workshop. XPP, a program written and distributed by G. Bard Ermentrout, is an incredibly useful resource for solving and modeling differential equations. In the workshop, Ian Price led an interactive presentation on how to operate XPP and its bifurcation program, AUTO. Topics included phase plane analysis, singular points, numerical methods, bifurcation analysis, and data fitting.

This workshop was open to all graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in mathematics and applied mathematics fields and exposure to undergraduate ordinary differential equations was a prerequisite for attending.

Social Event - October 9, 2009

Members were invited to join the officers at Hemingway's for Happy Hour.

Informational Meeting - September 15, 2009

We held an informational meeting where we explained all the benefits of joining SIAM and discussed our plans for the upcoming year.
