General Class Information
- Class Meetings:
Tu/Th, 4:00 - 5:15 PM, Thackeray 524
- Office Hours: Dr. Rubin will be available MF 3-4 PM, Tu 1:15-2 PM, and by appointment.
- Text: I will be following lecture notes, Ordinary differential equations and Dynamical Systems, by Gerald Teschl.
A collection of books will also be on reserve in the Engineering Library in Benedum Hall, and I may refer to these
as references for various topics.
Agenda/Homework Problems
Below is the schedule of sections from Teschl's notes to be covered, along with links to the corresponding handout and any other relevant items.
- Weeks 1-2 = Tu 9/1 - Tu 9/8: Chapter 1 (Newton's equations, Classification of differential equations, First order autonomous equations, Finding explicit solutions, Qualitative analysis of first order equations). Homework 1 is due Tuesday 9/15.
- Weeks 2-4 = Th 9/10 - Th 9/24: Chapter 2 (Theorems of existence, uniqueness, dependence of solutions on initial conditions, maximal intervals of existence; skip Section 2.3). Homework 2 is due Tuesday 9/29.
- Weeks 5-7 = Tu 9/29 - Th 10/15: Chapter 3 (Linear systems).
Homework 3 is due Thursday 10/15.
NOTE: There is no class on Tuesday 10/6 and Thursday 10/8.
There will be a make-up class on Friday 10/9 at 5 PM in Thackeray 524.
- Weeks 8-10 = Tu 10/20 - Th 11/5: Chapter 5 (Boundary value problems).
Homework 4 is due Thursday, 11/12.
- Weeks 11-16 = Tu 11/10 - Th 12/17: Chapters 6-8 (Dynamical Systems) - to be subdivided further soon.
