The Math Department is dedicated to providing a rich learning and
discovery
enviroment
for
all
students.
This
includes
many
opportunities
for
undergraduates
to
take
part
in
research
activities
in
partnership
with
faculty
members.
The research interests of the Department covers a wide spectrum of
topics including: Mathematical Biology (computational neuroscience),
Mathematical Finance (modelling and analysis of problems arising from
banking, insurance and investment)
Scientific Computing (computational fluid dynamics, robotics and media
flow) and Core Mathematics (analysis, dynamics, topology, geometry and
algebra). (Complete list of research
interests.)
Recent projects
have included: the rhythms of smell
(Manuel Gomez-Ramirez, advised by Prof. Bard Ermentrout), and
autohomeomorphisms of the plane and Cantor set (Rolf
Suabedissen, advised by Profs. Paul Gartside and Bob Heath).
Any
student
considering
carrying
out a
research
project
should
talk to
their
Advisor,
the
Undergraduate
Director
(Prof.
Yibiao
Pan)
or the
faculty
member
with
whom
they
wish
to

Projects
may be
done
to
fulfill
the
requirements
for
Courses
1800
or
1902.
Proposals
for Summer
Research
Projects
are
also
welcome.
Some
funding
for
Summer
Research
Projects
may be
available
from
the
Math
Department.
