Putnam Prize Success
The Putnam Prize is a National Competition for undergraduates. December 2, 2000 the Pitt Math team of Jonathon Holland, Chad Newell and Silviu Predoiu (coached and directed by Greg Constantine and George Sparling), spent 6 hours tackling the fiercest questions the Putnam committee could devise. They were competing against 2818 participants in teams from 434 colleges.
Continuing the tradition of previous years, the team did very well coming 23rd overall. Top scoring team member was Silviu Predoiu who came 20th, scoring an impressive 60 marks - congratulations Silviu! More

Integration Bee
The First Annual Integration Bee was held on Thursday, March 22nd, at 8 PM in room 343 of the Masonic Temple. In this event, 32 Pitt undergrad students competed for $200 of Pitt Bookstore gift certificates, donated by the University of Pittsburgh Honors College. Their efforts were cheered by a crowd estimated at over 100 students (grad and undergrad), faculty, and parents.

Chaos Project
How is it possible that a deterministic system, such as the weather, can exhibit wildly chaotic behavior? What tools can mathematicians use to explore and tame chaotic systems?
Using interactive applets, the students of Math 0450 (Honors Introductory Analysis), investigated the remarkable behavior of the logistics map, and then used the results from lectures to explain their experimental findings. More
